Edwin Augustine Springer, Sr., aged 95+1/2 years, of Acushnet, passed away peacefully at The Oaks Nursing Home comforted by his family.  He was the loving husband of the late Charlotte Alice Snow and together they shared 60 wonderful years. He was born on March 14, 1923 in Norwood, MA, the son of the late Roy Marinor and Harriet (Jones) Springer, and was the brother of Louise Springer, Elizabeth Ruth Rogers, Russell Springer, and Roy Marinor Springer, Jr.

Edwin spent his childhood living in East Walpole, MA, and many summers in Brunswick, Maine.  He attended Walpole High School before graduating from Norfolk County Agricultural School in 1942 and entered Stockbridge School of Agriculture majoring in animal husbandry. He left Stockbridge to enlist in the Navy during WWII.  He proudly served as a Third Class Petty Officer during the war.

When the war ended, he returned to Stockbridge and met his future wife Charlotte who was attending UMass Amherst.  He graduated Class of 1947 and then worked as a Fieldman for the Guernsey Cattle Club doing farm inspections throughout New England and identifying and registering calves with the American Guernsey Association.

He married Charlotte in 1949 and moved to Norfolk CT where he managed a small dairy farm.  While in CT, he had four sons, Edwin A Jr, Roy Marshall, Gary Casil, and Andrew Keen.

He eventually operated his own small dairy farm and also produced maple syrup on the farm to supplement his dairy income until he sold his farm in 1956.

He sold life insurance for Farm Family Insurance Co. until 1960 when he moved with his family to Acushnet, and worked for White's Farm Dairy and for Goodhue Lumber before starting his own business, Springer Forestry Services, in 1964 to perform forestry services and manage forest land for private and municipal land owners.  He also produced hand carved signs in his businesses early years.  As business grew and services expanded he formed Springer Environmental Services, Inc. specializing in forestry, erosion control, landscaping, snow removal, and operated a beach grass nursery growing beach grass to supply to waterfront landowners between Long Island, NY to Presque Isle, Maine. Through the years the company managed several thousand acres of forest land in Southeastern MA, provided erosion control to several miles of power lines for Boston Edison and performed landscaping services and snow removal for several businesses in New Bedford Industrial Park before the business was sold in 1988 and he retired to Brunswick, Maine.  He spent his final years in Acushnet closer to his family.

He served on the School Committee, Norfolk, CT, was a long time Tree Warden for the Town of Acushnet, Past President of Acushnet Federal Credit.  He was a member of several organizations including American Legion, American Forestry Association, Massachusetts Wood Producers Association, Farm Bureau Associates, Brunswick/Topsham Land Trust.

He enjoyed spending quality time with his family, growing blueberries, following the Boston Bruins and Red Sox and enjoyed the outdoors.

Survivors include his 4 sons, Edwin A. Springer, Jr, Roy M. Springer, Gary C. Springer and his two daughters Ashley and Caitlin, Andrew K. Springer and his wife Carol (Kisla) and their two daughters Jill and Emily. He leaves 5 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews and friends.

His Celebration of Life and Eternal Life Service will be held Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at 10 am in the First Congregational Church of Rochester, 11 Constitution Way, Rochester followed by burial at the White Cemetery, Keene Road, East Freetown, MA.  Relatives and friends invited.  Visiting hours will be Tuesday, September 18 from 4 to 8 pm at South Coast Chapel Mortuary, 158 Middleboro Road, East Freetown, MA.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to First Congregational Church of Rochester, 11 Constitution Way, P.O.
