Our mother, Marion Hilda “Maisie” (Cruz) Teixeira, 91, of New Bedford, passed away Thursday, November 8, 2018 at 10 P.M. at Nemasket Healthcare Center. She was the wife of the late John Joseph Teixeira and the daughter of the late Antone Manuel Cruz and Sylvestra (Oliveira) Cruz.
Born at St. Luke’s Hospital, she was raised at Converse Point, Marion, Massachusetts where her parents were caretakers of the Converse Estate.
When she married, she moved to New Bedford where she lived most of her life.
She was a Brownie Leader, a member of the Ladies Guild at Our Lady of Fatima Church for thirty-nine years, she was also a member of the Turtles and traveled extensively. Her trip to China and two to Cape Verde, once via Goree Island, were her most notable trips. She played golf, the piano and liked to walk, especially on beaches. She was an excellent cook and loved to read. She graduated from Wareham High School and attended Bryant College. In 1965, she graduated from Diman Vocational as a L.P.N. and in 1976 she graduated from B.C.C. from their R.N. program. The nursing profession was a fulfillment of her dream come true. She worked for St. Luke’s Hospital, Union Hospital and was a substitute nurse for New Bedford Public Schools prior to retirement.
She is survived by two daughters, Toni A. Teixeira of New Bedford and her long-time companion William H. Darling and Roberta M. Ashley and her husband James of Rochester. She has one grandson, Barry J. DePina of New Bedford.
She was predeceased by her sister, Barbara S. Allinson, a niece and many sisters and brothers-in-laws.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her Memorial Service on Monday Nov. 26 th at 10:30 am to be held at South Coast Chapel Mortuary, 158 Middleboro Rd (Rt.18) E Freetown, Ma.
In lieu of flowers, please have a Mass said for Marion, at your own church.
