Harold Wood Jr, 86 of Lakeville, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Friday, February 12, 2021. Harold was born on June 4, 1934 in Acushnet as the only child of Harold and Ivy (Holt) Wood. He leaves behind his wife of 39 years, Truda (Ferreira).
Mr. Wood grew up in Acushnet and went to Parting Ways School and graduated from New Bedford High School. He later attended Southeastern Massachusetts Technical Institute (now the University of Massachusetts/Dartmouth) and University of Massachusetts/Lowell where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He lived in Acushnet for 44 years and spent the latter half of his life in Lakeville. Harold was employed as a civil engineer for Massachusetts Highway Department for more than 40 years. Prior to that he worked for his father at the specialty lumber company, LD Flood. He also served in the Army for several years as a young man.
Harold was an enthusiastic cyclist, starting fifty years ago going on lengthy rides with his children and continued through recent years when he peddled 75 miles a week. He had always been an active person who was enthusiastic about learning and current events. He loved to read especially his daily paper, the Readers Digest, Consumer Reports, and novels--he always had a book going. Both his parents were born in England and he had a great pride and interest in his ancestry and genealogy. Harold could fix anything. As a young man he designed and built, with the assistance of his family, his first home and over the years he has built many items of furniture and structures. He also loved to camp and spent many wonderful trips from tenting at Cove Camp, travel trailer in Norway, Maine, to explorations with his wife in his camper van. But his greatest joy was his family. He loved nothing more than time spent together.
In addition to his wife, Harold is survived by his children Diane Wood-Bielski and her husband John Bielski of Middleborough, Hilary Wood and her partner Kent McCormack of Lakeville, Robert Wood and his wife Jocelyn of Wareham, stepdaughter Melissa Buell and her husband Jonathan Marks of San Anselmo, California, grandchildren Maeghan Bielski, Ian Bielski, Drew Bielski, Jonathan Wood, Tabitha Wood, Madison Buell, Mia Buell, and Luke Buell, and the mother of his children, Arlene Wood.
Due to COVID-19, funeral services will be held at a later date.
