Janice C. Gurney, 95, formerly of East Freetown, passed away on November 8. She was born on December 5, 1929 to James and Ruth Cree. She was a graduate of New Bedford High School and New Bedford Textile School, and worked in the textile industry prior to her marriage. She wed Ralph E. Gurney, Jr. on December 16, 1950 and they were married 68 years until his passing in 2019. She was a member of the East Freetown Congregational Christian Church, where she was a founding member of the “5 C’s” Couples Club. She volunteered at the Women’s Fellowship bazaar and the annual Chicken BBQ for many years. Janice had a life-long love of reading, and she enjoyed serving as the librarian at the James White Memorial Library for many years. In retirement, Janice and Ralph traveled extensively, visiting 46 states and Canada. She was an active member of the Freetown Senior Club and helped with fundraising for the Freetown Veteran’s Memorial Park. Janice is survived by her children Susan Costa of Acushnet, Karen Olson (Richard) of Park Ridge, IL, Rhonda Porawski (Ed) of East Freetown, and James Gurney of Eden, MD; grandchildren Angela, Felicia, Rachel, Greg, Aaron, Evan, Daniel and Janice; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Joyce Cannon and Carol Clark, and numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by husband Ralph, her parents, and siblings Donald Cree, Douglas Cree and Carolyn Gates.
Visitation will be from 10-11 am and funeral service at 11am on Saturday November 15, at the South Coast Chapel Mortuary, 158 Middleboro Road, East Freetown, MA. Burial will be at Chace Cemetery following the service.
