Kathleen A "Kathy" Bettencourt (Peterson), 73, of East Taunton was reunited in heaven with her husband and son on August 6th, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Kathy was the wife of the late Franklin Bettencourt and was the daughter of the late Roy and Roberta Peterson. She was born and raised in Middleboro and a graduate of the Middleboro High School class of 1970.
Kathy devoted her life to caring for others. She was a certified nursing assistant spending most of her career at Island Terrace nursing home in Lakeville. Following her retirement in 2017 Kathy continued to provide compassionate care to people at home. A caretaker by trade, Kathy's compassion could be witnessed wherever she was. Her patience, kindness, and selflessness could be observed by anyone she interacted with.
Kathy enjoyed family beach trips to Maine, visiting antique shops, collecting green depression glass, sea glass and heart shaped beach rocks. Kathy loved cheering on the Red Sox or her grandkids at their sporting events. She loved camping, cooking and baking everyone’s favorite meals or sweets. The thing that Kathy adored most of all was spending time and making memories with her family and friends. Kathy will be deeply missed by all whose lives she touched.
Kathy was the mother of the late Michael Bettencourt. She is survived by her daughter Tracy Dowd and her favorite son-in-law Dan Dowd, her son Matthew Bettencourt and her daughter-in-law his wife, Vanessa, and daughter-in-law Linda Ricardo; her pride and joy, her grandchildren Julia Dowd and Bentley Dowd; her brother Richard Peterson of Canaan, Maine, several cousins, nieces, nephews, uncle, friends and special neighbors. Her beloved dog Bucky, and her grand pups Winston and Bubba J.
Per Kathy’s request, there will be a celebration of her beautiful life (date to be announced) and a private burial.
In lieu of flowers please make donations to The Jimmy Fund or Boston Children’s Hospital.
The tide recedes, but leaves behind
Bright seashells on the sand
The sun goes down, but gentle warmth
Still lingers on the land.
For every joy that passes
Something beautiful remains.
