Kathryn “Kathy” J. Bates
Kathryn “Kathy” J. Bates, 85, passed away peacefully on May 19 th 2026, following a brief illness.
Born in New Hope, Pennsylvania on October 12 th , 1940, Kathy spent most of her life in Massachusetts, where she devoted herself to her family and those she loved. Selfless and caring, she always put others before herself and found her greatest joy in spending time with her family and supporting those closest to her.
Kathy donated her time as a crossing guard for Pulaski Elementary School in New Bedford,
before going on to work in an environmental lab for many years. She also dedicated much of
her time volunteering for Relay for Life, generously giving her support to help others in her
community.
An athlete for much of her life, Kathy enjoyed both playing and watching sports. She especially loved cheering on her grandchildren and supporting them in all their activities and accomplishments. Kathy enjoyed doing puzzles, watching reality tv shows and coloring pictures or her granddaughter. She also loved to bake, with her homemade butter cookies being a treasured family tradition that everyone looked forward to during the holidays.
Kathy was the daughter of the late Muriel and Lawrence Johnson. She was preceded in death by brother Ron Johnson and sisters Audrey Holcombe and Liza Ameden
She is survived by her children, Teri Desautels of New Bedford, Michael Bates of Acushnet, and Todd Bates of Rehoboth, along with their spouses. “Grumma,” as she was affectionately known by many, also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Nathan Bates of New Bedford, Elijah Rodriguez, Cody Costa, and Violet Bates, all of Rehoboth.
She is also survived by her dear friend of more than 20 years, Dianne Janak of Lakeville.
Kathy will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
A private celebration of Kathy’s life will be held by her family at a future date.
