Pauline Ashley Obituary

East Freetown- Pauline Anne (Baker) Ashley, 91, died peacefully at home, in the company of family, on the morning of March 3rd, 2018.  She was predeceased by her husband Theodore Chace Ashley to whom she was married for nearly 70 years.

She was born in 1927 in New Bedford where she spent the early part of her life in foster care while her mother Louise (Peloquin) Baker of St. Joseph of Sorel, Canada worked as a weaver.  When she was nine her mother married Henry A. Baker of East Freetown who adopted her as his child.

She was employed at the East Freetown Post Office for many years, becoming Postmaster from 1980-1987.

She was an avid reader and lifelong learner. Her many hobbies included ceramics, painting, knitting, cross-stitch and sewing.  She traveled extensively throughout the US as well as internationally. She spoke several languages and maintained friendships with families throughout the world.

She will be remembered for her gourmet cooking, chocolatiering and a large cookbook collection. She made many wedding cakes for her family and friends.

She took pride in her unique stone home built by her father who was a stonemason, and enjoyed living there independently in the company of her cats.

She is survived by her brother Peter A. Baker of East Freetown, and her five children: Susan D. (Ashley) Michael of Sarasota, Fl,  Stephen E. Ashley and his wife Susan of East Freetown, Brian J. Ashley and his wife Susan of Pueblo, CO, Linda L. (Ashley) Cass and her husband David of East Freetown, and Andrew E. Ashley and his wife Abigail of East Freetown, as well as 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the South Coast Chapel Mortuary, 158 Middleboro Road,(Rt.18) East Freetown, Saturday March 31, at 11 am.
