"Peggy" Mary Margaret (Kelley) Austin

Mary Margaret “Peggy” Austin passed away peacefully at home the morning of June 24, 2021 after a period of declining health. She was the wife of Robert E. Austin to whom she was married for 49 years.

Born July 9, 1951 in Boston, she was the daughter of the late John M. and Ellen (Collins) Kelley. Peggy was a hairstylist at Del’s Hair Salon alongside her dear friend Mary Ellen for over 46 years. She loved seeing her clients every day, and developed close relationships with many longtime patrons. In her spare time Peggy enjoyed sailing with her husband and friends, attending yard sales with Denny Lee, gardening, reading, going to the beach, and traveling; the family home in Maine was a favorite destination of hers. Family was of utmost importance to Peggy. She looked forward to welcoming loved ones to her home for the Holidays and always made her world famous potato salad for everyone to enjoy. Most of all, she cherished time spent with her four grandchildren whom she considered the lights of her life. Peggy was always on the move, pursuing her varied interests. She was petite, bright-eyed, and sweet-natured, but despite her diminutive size, she managed to be a force of nature. Those fortunate enough to have known Peggy will remember her smile which lit up a room, her sense of humor which kept everyone laughing, her pride in her Irish heritage (and love of a good bourbon and Coke), her go-getting spirit and the "tinge" more. 

In addition to her husband, Peggy is survived by her two sons, Michael and his wife Kristine of Fairhaven, and Robert D. and his wife Bethany of New Bedford; her four grandchildren Colton, Gavin, Ava and Piper; her two sisters, Denise Kearns and her husband Frank of Norton, and Jackie McCann and her husband Tom; her brother, Kevin Kelley and his wife Janet; and several nieces and nephews, extending as far away as North Carolina.

The family expresses their extreme gratitude to the nurses of Kindred Hospice who provided exceptional care to Peggy for the last several months. They extend special thanks to Kerrin.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her services, which will be held at South Coast Chapel Mortuary, 158 Middleboro Road (Rt18) East Freetown, Ma 02717 on Friday July 9, 2021, a memorial gathering from 1pm to 4:25 pm with a memorial service at 4:30pm. Burial will be private.
