Stella Sawicki, age 96, of New Bedford, passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at Alden Court Nursing Care and Rehabilitation Center in Fairhaven. She was the widow of Walter Sawicki and the daughter of the late Frank and Valerya (Leszniewska) Lobacz. Stella was born in Boston and grew up in Wakefield, Massachusetts.

Stella graduated from Wakefield High School in 1936 and from Salem College in 1941 with a Bachelors degree in Special Education. She began teaching in the New Bedford Public School System as the city's first Special Education teacher in 1942. Stella enjoyed a 41-year public school teaching career, and after retiring, she worked as a volunteer at St. Francis Xavier School in Acushnet for 14 years.

Stella was forever a teacher, even outside the classroom. She was extremely patient and helpful, and always more than happy to put the needs of others before her own. In her free time, Stella enjoyed cooking, painting, and spending time with her beloved family and friends.

Survivors also include her brother-in-law, Stanley Sawicki of New Bedford, and sister-in-law Helen Lobacz of New Hampshire.

Stella was the sister of the late Ernest Lobacz of Maine and Edward Lobacz of New Hampshire.

A memorial service will be held at mfsc llc South Coast Chapel, 158 Middleboro Road (Route 18), East Freetown on Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at 11:00 am. Her burial will be private.
